Lula Fox was born March 26, 1923 in Springville, Utah to John Alfred Fox and Margaret Chloe Boyer, their sixth child. She had three brothers and six sisters: Helen (Sanford), Margaret (Smith), Cleone “Toni” (Ferguson), Rulon Fox, Annie (Forshee), Merlin Fox, Marshall Fox, and Doreene (Schouten). In her youth, she participated in music and productions in the church and school. She graduated from Springville High School in 1941 and attended one year at Brigham Young University. Lula was called on a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in November 1943, serving in the Western States Mission, Denver, Colorado.
While serving, she met Private Don Clyde Garner who was in the Army Air Corp stationed at Lowery Field. Lula was released from her mission May 22, 1945; Don used furlough to go to Springville on June 19 to see Lula. They were married in the Salt Lake City, Utah temple on Monday, June 25, 1945. Don was sent overseas for nine months at the end of WWII and when they reunited in June 1946, they moved to the Emmett Idaho valley where they farmed and milked cows. Over the next 17 years their nine children were born: Clyde Lee born in 1947; Linda in 1949; Carma 1950; Lance John born 1954; Chris Evan in 1956; Lucy in 1958; Carl Fox born in 1961; Len True in1962; and Curt David in1964.
Don died of lung cancer at age 50 July 20, 1974. Lula was single for six years with six children to raise and a farm to run to support the family. She married Rulon Zaugg November 25, 1980 and moved to Weiser, Idaho and enjoyed 18 wonderful years with him. Lula suffered from back pain and had surgery in 1996. Rulon passed away May 24, 1998 of colon cancer complicated by Parkinson's disease. She was single again for two years before marrying Lynn Alfred Anderson on November 18, 2000. He passed away February 7, 2008 of a heart attack in the Boise Temple waiting room. Lula continued to live in the Weiser home until the fall of 2013 when she moved to some of her children's homes on a season to season basis. She used a cane, walker and wheelchair due to pain in her back and hips. She moved into an assisted living center in March 2017 in Lindon, Utah where she resided until her death.
Lula had an excellent singing voice, one of the qualities her first husband Don noticed from the beginning. She lead the music in every auxiliary in the LDS church all her life. She served as a temple worker in the Boise Temple. Her leadership abilities were put to use as Relief Society counselor and in many stake callings. Hobbies included sewing, baking, cooking, gardening, cleaning, crocheting, quilting, reading, traveling in the motor home, and of course music. Since early 1980 she has sent birthday and anniversary cards to family, friends, and church members, spending “who knows how much money” on this thoughtful gesture every month. Her positive and cheerful attitude brightened homes at family events. Many of the grandchildren remember her humming church hymns.
She is survived by her nine children and spouses Clyde (Sylvia Anderson – deceased; Sheryl Anderson Haacke), Linda (Reed Dame), Carma (Stephen Woolstenhulme), Lance (Rhonda Gardner), Chris (Marilyn Jacobs Aldred – divorced; Lori Shell Kelley), Lucy (Richard Beck), Carl (Bridgette Auger), Len, and Curt (Michelle Summers), forty one grandchildren, and 149 great grandchildren (one deceased), sister Doreene Schouten (husband Ron), numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws, and step relations from the Aldred, Zaugg and Anderson families, who called her Grandma Lula.
