James Burton Obituary

James “Jim” William Burton, a man known for his quick wit, optimistic spirit, and love of the game, passed away on December 24, 2025, in Boise, Idaho, just shy of his 70th birthday.

Born on December 30, 1955, in Murray, Utah, Jim was the son of Earl and Sue Marjorie Burton. He was raised in Ontario, Oregon, where he grew up alongside his older brothers, Robert and Mike. From a young age, Jim was defined by his energy and athleticism; he was a true competitor who excelled in track, football, basketball, and baseball.

Jim carried that love of sports throughout his life. Whether he was playing tennis, cheering on BYU football and basketball or engaging in a competitive game of basketball in the driveway, he was always in his element. Some of his family’s fondest memories are of Jim playing football or soccer with his children, nieces, nephews, and brother Robert on the large front yard.

A lifelong lover of music, Jim was an avid fan of The Beatles and took great pride in having seen The Rolling Stones in concert many times. Professionally, he spent many years as a sales professional across various industries, a career that suited his outgoing nature and ability to connect with people.

Jim’s greatest pride, however, was his children. He was the loving and devoted father of Sarah Jo Burton and Charles Paul Burton. He will be remembered most for his "off-the-wall" comments, his legendary jokes, and a smile that could light up any room. His optimistic personality remained a constant gift to his friends and family.

Jim was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and found great joy in his faith and the community surrounding it.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Sue Marjorie Burton, and his brothers, Mike Burton and Robert Burton. He is survived by his children, Charles and Sarah (Jon), grandchildren Bailey, Gable, Isabella, Joe and Liam, great grandson Chase, sister in laws Karla and Elva, nephews Ira and Anthony and nieces Marisa and Natasha who carry forward his legacy of laughter and kindness.

Jim’s smile, laugh, and unwavering optimism will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
