Gene Leroy Thompson Sr.

Retired Sergeant First Class Gene Leroy Thompson Sr. 1935 - 2024, age 89, long time Nyssa resident, passed away December 11, 2024. Gene was born to Raymond and Alma (Hubka) Thompson on February 17, 1935 in Beatrice, NE. He enlisted in the U.S. Marines and subsequently the U.S. Army, retiring from Ft. Leonard Wood in1981. He met his future wife, Kyong Nam Song, on a blind date while he was stationed in Korea. They married on May 7, 1969 at the American Embassy in Seoul, Korea. They travelled throughout the United States during his enlistment, raising four children and settling in Nyssa in 1980.
Gene was a racquetball enthusiast, and avid golfer and fisherman; enjoying the camaraderie of his fellow players. Whether it be beers after an activity or early morning coffee, the conversations and lively banter meant the world to him; thank you.
Gene was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, giving everything he had to his family. Gene is survived by his sister Mary Takami, children; Gene L. (Becky) Thompson Jr of Nyssa; Joe (Renee) Thompson of Kuna; Helen Plaza of Ontario; and Catherine (Jeff Wheeler) Thompson of Sublimity. His memory will be cherished by his grandchildren; Asia (Paul) Daggett, Serafia Plaza, Abigail Plaza, Ryan Thompson and Raymond Thompson; and great-grandchildren; Jagger and Callum. He was preceded in death by daughter, Rose Nam Thompson; wife Kyong and his sister Yvonne Murphy. An intimate celebration of Gene's life will be hosted by his family at Casa Jaramillo in Ontario on Saturday, February 15, 2025. Friends and family are welcome from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m.
